THE IMPORTANCE OF HOST FAMILIES
A host family is one of the most important aspects of a baseball player's summer league experience. Many of the players on the Melville Millionaires are in a brand new environment, away from home and family. The goal of the program is to help players adjust to moving to a new area, assist them as they get acquainted with the community and provide a safe and stable living environment. It also provides an opportunity for the community to assist in the development of these players on and off the field. The Melville organization strongly believes the relationships that are forged between players and their host families are memorable and last a lifetime. As well, since half of the Mils games are played "on the road" players are only in your home some of the time. During our home schedule, the players will be at the ballpark from approximately 3:30-10 PM.
HOST FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES
Host families are asked to provide housing for their assigned player(s) for the duration of their stay in Melville. Players will arrive beginning of June. The Millionaire season, including playoffs, will conclude no later that August 15th. During that time families should:
- Make the billets feel at home
- Inform them of your house rules, including telephone and computer usage, food, etc
- Provide a bed for each player, ensuring the billets privacy.
- Provide access to your home, usually by key or garage door opener
- Provide three nutritional meals per day. Please note you are not required to prepare the billet meals however you must ensure that there is food for the billet to prepare himself should he need to make his own meals. Inform billet if he will be making his own meals. Most players tend to wake up later in the day and may not require breakfast.
- Provide laundry facilities. You are not required to do his laundry for him.
To the extent host families can assist with transportation (for example, dropping a player off at the field or providing a bike) that would be helpful but is not required. We do not recommend you lend out your vehicle to your player. When your player is out it is courtesy for him to advise you of his whereabouts and expected time of return. Do not lend your player money.
HOST FAMILY BENEFITS
When you become a host family you are adding a new member to your family not just a tenant. The players are appreciative of the effort you will be making as a host family and can serve as positive role models for your children. Players are very respectful of their environment.
The Millionaires will reimburse host families $400 a month per player. Host families will also receive free season tickets. Families are sure to love the excitement and entertainment of Millionaire baseball and the players enjoy seeing their adopted families in the stands. But the longest lasting benefit of becoming a host family is the bond that will be forged between your family and a Millionaires player, the sort of relationship that lasts for years. Players and their host families have traditionally kept in contact long after playing careers have ended, remaining friends and sharing family milestones. You will also have the benefit of learning of a new culture, as the majority of players will be from the US.
BECOMING A HOST FAMILY
